- Ok, its true that older PBs were very poor quality, and not very expandable. I
- built my first computer, bought a GateWay 2000 afterwards, and most recently
- purchased a Packard Bell P100. The PB has plenty of open slots, a ziff socket
- to upgrade the cpu, the latest AMI bios. It is plug and play, is mpeg-2
- compliant...in short, they are trying to make up for their past bad reputation.
-
- I bought a PB because it was the best VALUE for the money. The GateWay
- (I purchase for a business) was a huge letdown considering that for over
- $1000.00 more I got a computer that was only a little better than the PB.
- Hey, look, what do most people use their home pc for anyway? I have a family
- and we needed something that was economical, loaded with software, and had
- enough performance to run everything. The PB has served that purpose as well
- as any other machine would have, and I have $1000+ dollars in my pocket. I have
- used their support (it sucks, but they will spend all day on the phone with you
- if necessary to fix your problem), but I also have an extended support plan from
- Best Buy (where I purchased it).
-
- BTW, the Gateway P120 had only a 145 watt power supply! They said that the
- newer hardware didn't even use close to that much. So my PB 150 watts should
- be more that adequate. Also, when I switched operating systems on the GateWay
- (to UNIX), they would not support their own hardware because their support
- "process" required Win95 to be installed. So when their keyboard failed
- repeatedly, I had no way of fixing it (even though I had purchased their
- gold support plan). Their support had quicker response, but they certainly
- didn't care about the customer.
-
- Just my two cents...:)
